“My juror’s choice is Samonte Cruz’s piece, ‘Eternal Safe Space: Trans-cestors’ Funerary Mask’; an exceptional work for me in the show, because of how much it speaks to the absence of serenity that many trans/gender non-conforming people face in this current time; navigating the past, present and future traumas of existing in a world that systemically inflicts structural violence on our bodies in both life and death.”

Meet my Filipinx trans-cestor! I’ve been dreamin Meet my Filipinx trans-cestor! I’ve been dreaming about making this funerary mask for over a year.

Formed from 22k solid gold, the hours I spent labouring over it turned my studio into a sacred space; each skrike of the hammer, a prayer. Eventually, this ancestor emerged from the gold.

Having the opportunity to exhibit this piece at @NYCJewelryWeek is an absolute dream. A huge thanks to @queermetalsmiths for putting together Adorned Serenity; a powerful collection of queer & trans expressions of safe space & inner peace.

The exhibition gave me an opportunity to reflect on why the feeling of safety as a QTPOC has been so elusive. It gave me the chance to express the significance of this piece to me personally, as well as, the medicine it carries for the most marginalized people in our communities.

If you want to support my work, consider joining my Patreon [link in bio]. I’ll be sharing some exclusive, behind scenes videos of my entire creation process!

To read more about the piece & see all the other amazing work, check out the virtual exhibition! Link in bio. 😘

Samonte Cruz is a disabled, mixed-race, mixed-gender, Filipinx goldsmith, multi-media artist, educator & community organizer. Originally from the Seattle area, Samonte now lives & creates on unceded Sinixt Territory, in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia [BC].

After a serious spinal injury in 2010, Samonte’s abilities suddenly and drastically changed. In response to living with chronic pain, they began to seek out more accommodating opportunities for creative expression. In 2015, Samonte enrolled in the Kootenay School of the Arts jewelry program at Selkirk College, where a culture of adaptation & innovation allowed Samonte to develop as a metalsmith, despite physical limitations.

In addition to teaching beginner’s jewelry classes at Selkirk College & making custom jewelry for clients, Samonte is also developing a body of work titled, Filipinx Survivance: Contemporary Cultural Artifacts & Adornment, funded by @Canada.Council of the Arts, @ColumbiaBasinTrust & Columbia Kootenay Cultural Exchange.

I’ve been thinking a lot about ancestral memory I’ve been thinking a lot about ancestral memory & collective grief. Witnessing how deeply I’ve been feeling the terror inflicted on an indigenous population by a tyrannical, colonial power; the double speak & flat out lies.

My empathy runs so deeply because I have an intimate understanding of the horrors my Filipino ancestors experienced, as well as, the violence that took place & the continual harm inflicted on indigenous communities whose land I now call home.

As futile as it feels sometimes, I’ve been trying to lean into my creative practice. Working on a small batch production run of these Linglingo Drip pendants.

To me, these pendants symbolize our collective resilience, resistance & survival from colonial violence; transforming cultural theft & destruction into a source of power. The Spanish were literally stealing & melting down all that was precious to my ancestors, yet they/we remain.

I loathe colonial capitalism & the terror it brings. Unfortunately, the reality is I’m forced to operate inside of this system in order to acquire the things I need to survive.

If you’d like to support me & my work, you can purchase these pendants and other shiny things in my online shop! I also have some new pieces I’m excited to share, so watch this space. 👀 #WaitForIt

The first time I cut through metal scared the crap The first time I cut through metal scared the crap out of me, because it was much more physically challenging than I had anticipated. All my fears and self-doubt came rushing in.

Can I even do this? Have I made a terrible mistake? A part of me wanted to quit right there; end it, so I wouldn’t have to watch myself fail.

I did my best to acknowledge and disregard the cacophony of negative self talk in my head, and resisted the urge to compare my pace with my classmates.

Then… I did it; I sawed through freaking metal.

It felt like a serious triumph.

Learning how to make straight cuts and create curves and angles marked the beginning of my ability to shape metal and begin to create in this medium.

I was still super self conscious about being the slowest in the class, but I did it. I allowed myself the time I needed, and I took the first steps in my journey to become a goldsmith. 🤩

Given where I started, I can’t tell you how meaningful it is to me to be teaching these skills!

If you are in the Nelson, BC area this fall, come join me in the studio at Selkirk College! Jewellery: Intro to Basics starts September 19th at the Victoria Street campus (aka @KootenayStudioArts). Find out more or register through the link in my bio.

When I talk about custom work, I mean any piece th When I talk about custom work, I mean any piece that is unique to you, but that doesn’t always mean that we are starting from a blank slate. I love making pieces that honour a story and relationships, and heirloom redesign is one kind of custom work that can really do that.

When someone you love dies and leaves you a piece of jewelry they have treasured it can be incredible to wear something they have worn and keep that memory close. But sometimes it just isn’t your style. Sometimes those pieces end up staying hidden away, almost forgotten, too significant not to keep, but never worn.

In heirloom redesign we take your piece, or pieces, and recreate them, crafting them into something both old and new, and truly you!

We can reclaim the metal and the stones and work them into a new item. We can use some of the design elements of the pieces, or not… We can think about the relationship you had, or the person they were and find ways to honour that in the design. And the piece we create will be something truly you. Something that holds what they passed on to you, but allows you to make it something your own. Honouring them in something you’ll treasure and wear.

This incredible wedding ring was something of an heirloom redesign, taking gold jewellery gifted from family members, and an heirloom diamond from the Philippines, and crafting a stunning wedding ring that means the world. These heirloom items are now worn everyday and will in turn be a piece that is handed down for generations to come.

Want to talk to me about an heirloom redesign? Drop me a message, or fill in my custom enquiries form. (Link in bio)

LONG POST CONTINUED… [PART 3/3] Your support w LONG POST CONTINUED… [PART 3/3]

Your support will help me access essential healthcare, particularly the regular bodywork I need due to my spinal injury and chronic pain. As an artist, my creative work is my lifeline, providing me with flexibility to accommodate my body's needs. However, not being able to predict monthly income makes covering personal and business expenses a challenge.

I want to create a more accessible way for you to support me, regardless of your interest in custom jewelry. No matter how much you are able to give, everyone will have the same access to the content, community, and space. No status, no hierarchy, just a space for us to share perspectives, ask questions, and connect.

I'm excited to invite you to join my Patreon and be part of my support network and community; I’m especially excited to share a deeper look into my research and creation process as I develop prototypes inspired by my Filipino ancestors metalwork. With this transition, I'll be sharing less on social media, reserving exclusive content for my patrons.

I believe in transparency and flexibility, so feel free to offer what you can afford and change it whenever you need to. Your contribution will support my health, art, and overall security.

Yes, I am asking for financial help, and yes, it makes me feel vulnerable, but I'm also hopeful. Your support will make a meaningful impact on my journey, and I'm grateful for every step we take together.

Thank you for considering joining my Patreon (link in bio) and being a part of my artistic adventure!

LONG POST CONTINUED… [PART 2/3] These are the LONG POST CONTINUED… [PART 2/3]

These are the stories and insights I'm most excited to share, but they also require a significant amount of energy to create.

As an independent QTPOC artist, word-of-mouth referrals and connections made on social media are crucial for the success of my business. However, I've been facing challenges with recent changes on social media platforms that have led to a decrease in engagement and visibility. Additionally, some of my posts, particularly those addressing social justice issues, have been blocked or suppressed.

Creating free content for social media has been time-consuming and costly, but I believed it was the only way to reach more people and sustain my art practice. However, I've come to realize that this model is flawed, especially for disabled artists like myself.

I understand that jewelry is a luxury, and I don't want anyone to feel pressured to make purchases they can't afford. That's why I've decided to launch a Patreon (link in bio), offering an alternative way for people to support me and my craft. Patreon is a membership platform that allows artists and creators to provide exclusive content to their subscribers.

Your support will help me access essential healthcare, particularly the regular bodywork I need due to my spinal injury and chronic pain…

Asking for help can be challenging, but I've come to realize that we are not meant to go through life alone. We, as a social beings, thrive on interdependence and community support. That's why I'm reaching out today to share an exciting opportunity!

Would you like to support my artistic journey and help me keep creating?

Do you have a little extra to spare and want to make a difference?

Perhaps you’d like to become my patron on Patreon?! [Link in bio]☺️

Many of you have shown a strong interest in the topics I'm passionate about, from supporting marginalized artists, to advocating for social justice and ancestral healing.
